Music Scholarship

The Joel Talerico Memorial Scholarship

Joel Talerico was one of the founding members of the Ellensburg Big Band. He studied music at Central Washington University and though his primary career was serving this community as a fireman for 26 years, he continued to have a passion for making music throughout his life.

The Ellensburg Big Band Joel Talerico Memorial Scholarship is awarded to an Ellensburg High School student who understands the value of music in our lives; a student who exemplifies Joel’s upbeat attitude, love of community, and passion for music the he shared with all of us.

Donations to the Scholarship Fund are welcomed and appreciated. Please click the link below if you are interested in contributing to the fund.

The following is a recording of the band playing “When You’re Smiling,” our tribute to Joel’s memory.

Watch our new COVID-19 version of "Ain't That A Kick In The Head" live on Friday 10/9 at 7:15pm! Grab your favorite beverage/snack and at least pretend you're at one of our live gigs as you watch this video live with the rest of the world.

Sung to the tune of Dean Martin’s “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head” by our vocalist Tim Sorey, with updated Covid Compliant lyrics by Judge Jim Hurson and Professor Tim Sorey. All the band members recorded their parts in their individual houses and we merged the video later. Listen closely to the lyrics — this is how we feel, guys! We miss you.
